5 Rules for improving safety in your manufacturing operation

Your manufacturing operation is one of the most important parts of your business. Obviously, it’s important that you market products properly and offer a great service to your customers, but that’s all irrelevant if you can’t manufacture the perfect product in the first place. That’s why you need to pay extra attention to your manufacturing process. One of the most important things to consider is safety because there is a long list of dangers involved in manufacturing of any kind. If you haven’t reviewed your health and safety policies recently, here are some simple ways to make sure that your manufacturing operation is safe.

A Culture Of Safety

If you’re going to make sure that health and safety procedure is followed to the letter, you need everybody to be on board. That’s why it’s important to establish a culture of safety throughout the business. During training, you need to stress the importance of health and safety and let your employees know that they all have a responsibility to keep themselves and their coworkers safe on the job. When everybody is pulling their weight, it’s a lot easier to keep on top of health and safety.

Test Equipment

The equipment that you use for manufacturing is very dangerous if it isn’t maintained properly, that’s why testing is so important. You need to have non destructive testing carried out on all of your manufacturing equipment on a regular basis. That way, you can identify any problems and get them fixed before they become a real danger to your employees.

Update Equipment

As well as testing and maintaining equipment properly, it’s important that you update it regularly. Newer equipment has better safety features built in so you can reduce the chance of any accidents. Older equipment is also far more likely to go wrong and cause accidents, even if you’re maintaining it properly so an upgrade is always a good idea. The other major benefit of updating your equipment is that it will produce a better product. If your competitors are using the latest stuff and you aren’t, you’re going to fall behind.

Embrace Automation

Technology is creating more and more opportunities for automation in manufacturing and you should embrace it. The fewer people you have working on the production line, the smaller the risk of accident and injury. Automation is also far more cost effective because you don’t have to pay as many staff members and you reduce the problems created by human error. It takes a lot of initial investment to implement this new automation technology but you’ll make a lot of savings in the long term and it makes manufacturing safer.

Regular Training

It goes without saying that you’re training people properly when they first start working for you but how often do you train existing employees? Over time, it’s easy for people to forget health and safety rules and get into bad habits. That’s why it’s important to refresh their memory every now and again with more training.

If you follow these basic rules, you can massively improve the safety of your manufacturing staff and avoid any disasters.
