One of the biggest concerns in any public space is the possibility of fire, and this is something that you should think about if you are to keep your people as safe as possible. There is only a certain amount you can do to ensure that fire does not break out, but you can do plenty to ensure that it does not spread or badly harm anyone. By having fire doors in place in your office, and keeping them clear of obstructions at all times, you will ensure that you can keep a clear route to the outside at all times. You should also bear in mind that there will be a law about how many fire extinguishers per square footage in your area, so make sure you are falling in line with that. You should also secure them on proper fire extinguisher stands, so that you can be sure that they are not going to damage anyone prior to being used. They will also be less likely to be lost.
Another huge concern is ensuring that you keep only people in the building who should be there. You can fairly easily achieve this for the most part, but extra vigilance is needed when you need to have contractors from outside the business to come in and carr out some work. Having a policy of always asking for ID will go much of the distance here, but you should also ensure that you only let in visitors whom you are expecting. The exception to this rule is auditors who are potentially likely to come whenever they choose, so you have to be especially wary when it comes to them.
The only way to really make sure that nobody is harmed in the office is to ensure that everyone is aware that it is their own responsibility to take care of themselves. It is also your own responsibility to take care of your employees, of course, but they also need to help out on that front. That means taking basic care, reporting anything dangerous, and generally being an active part of the safety process. As long as that is happening, everyone is safer.
