Security tips for safer in store payments

There are lots of reasons why we need to be careful when we are making purchases online these days. There are a lot of viruses and hackers that could result in us losing our data, and thieves could easily gain access to our various account passwords. If they get into your bank account, then you might end up losing a lot of hard-earned money.

However, it’s not just online where we need to stay safe. Did you also know that some hackers can infiltrate our data when we are making a purchase in an actual store? There are certain ways our data can be stolen over unsecured connections. So, as you can see, it is important that you ensure all of your customers are protected when they are making purchases in your store. Here’s how.

Don’t Hold Onto Cardholder Data

It’s a bad idea to keep hold of your customers’ credit and debit card details. There are a few different reasons for this but, basically, it’s best to get rid of all the data and then you don’t have to worry about it being stolen from you. So, it’s always best to dispose of all payment information as securely as you can. And then you don’t need to worry about it at all.

Invest In A Secure Point Of Sale

If you have an iPad POS system in your store that you use to take payment from customers, it is crucial that it has all the latest cybersecurity on it. Ideally, the iPad needs to have all the latest anti-virus software installed onto it. That way, you don’t have to worry about viruses weakening the system. As well as that, it’s important to use a POS system that uses encryption so that your customers’ card details are always as secure as they can be until you dispose of them.

Train Your Staff

You need to make sure that your staff are well trained in how to take payments from customers. They need to know the POS system inside and out so that they never run into any problems when using it. If they do face any issues, they could be at risk of opening the system up and making the payment details accessible to cyber hackers.

Securing Your WiFi

If you offer WiFi in your store, it’s best to make sure it is always secured so that anyone using it needs a password to log on. This may be a slight inconvenience to your customers, but at least it is keeping their device safe when they are browsing online. Some hackers are able to get into open WiFi connections and use these to infiltrate a device’s data.

Comply With Industry Standards

As always, you should comply with your industry’s standards when it comes to keeping your customers’ payments safe and secure. This can be very serious if you don’t comply, and you could face a fine if you are ever caught out.
