4 Boxes you need to check before becoming a digital nomad

The life of a digital nomad is, on paper at least, the very definition of living the dream. Think of it! A license to travel the world and make a living as you go, free from the pressures of having to pay your rent and bills and unshackled from the quotidian life of the rat race. However, while it’s understandably appealing to lead the life of a digital nomad, such a life has its caveats. You’ll need to put in a lot of planning before you even consider hopping on a plane. Before you set off on your globe trotting working adventure, you need to make sure you check all of the following boxes…

Know where you’ll be going

This doesn’t just mean knowing which country you’ll visit (although that’s obviously important, too). It behoves any vacationer to know as much as possible about their chosen destination but it’s doubly important for digital nomads. Where will you be staying? Where will you be working? What will your commute be like between the two? How reliable will your internet connection be? Will you have access to a landline telephone if you need one (outbound overseas calls can be expensive on mobile phones)? Will your hotel or hostel have an office facility or will you be working out of a coffee shop? If it does have an office facility will you need to book it in advance?

The more you know, the quicker you’ll be able to get up and running and start making money by day so you can enjoy your destination by night.

Know what you’ll be doing (and who you’ll be doing it for)

Before you set off you’ll need to know exactly how you’ll be making a living. Ideally you should have a contract in place before you set out or at the very least some sort of commitment on the part of your client / employer. The last thing you need is to find yourself in an unfamiliar country with no money and no propensity to earn.

Ensure your belongings are safely and securely stored

You’ll need to be able to stay focused on your work (and having fun in your downtime) and this is easier to do when you’re not plagued by worries about what’s going on back home. As such, you’ll benefit from knowing that your belongings are safely stored in a dry and secure facility. Check out Canning Vale Storage Units to get an idea of what you can expect and potential rates. The more you trust your storage facilities the less you’ll be worried about your belongings.

Make sure you have the right laptop

It’s important to remember that your laptop will not only be your livelihood, it will also likely be a source of entertainment and the means by which you stay in touch with friends, family and loved ones. Thus, it’s important to make sure that you have the right one. Processing power needs will depend on the nature of your hustle, however you’ll want a computer with great battery life and storage. You’ll also need to ensure that it’s insured before you leave and if (Heaven forbid) it should become lost, stolen or damaged, it shouldn’t cost the world to replace it.

When you have the right infrastructure in place you can enjoy this wonderful lifestyle and be the envy of your friends in the rat race.
